Ceremonial Dreaming​

I used to dream all the time; I remember having dreams as a kid that I look back on with more clarity than most of my childhood memories. ⁣I’d have dreams of being chased, strange dreams with military-like themes, of finding refuge in desolate places or crowds of people all around me.

Somehow, the ability to dream and recall my dreams faded in my young-adulthood. I suspect it was due, in part by poor substance use, dissociative behaviors, and detrimental sleep hygiene practices – or simply: I wasn’t yet willing to see inside myself. Things changed when I set my intention to begin working with ayahuasca, and again after my first ceremony in 2017. 

My dreams exploded: vivid, nightly, and emotionally charged.⁣ Even up until last year I would dread going to sleep at night because I knew what was coming – I was going to be confronted with the vestiges of childhood trauma. The nightmares from my childhood returned and once again I was being chased, haunted by unwanted imagery, and scared.

⁣It wasn’t until I started working with my friend, and fellow psychonaut, Cordell Jacks, that I developed an understanding around my dreams: how to develop dream recall, tune in to what was rising up inside me, and interpret them using my inner-wisdom. I learned that I went into ceremony each night through my dreams, that with practice, I could hone my dream carry out intentions through lucid dreaming, and integrate my nightly experiences into my day-to-day life.⁣
