Dark Moon Wisdom: We are Allowed to Rest

Aries season has already begun, and we are catapulting into the richness of spring and the possibilities it brings with it – can you feel it? I know this; I’ve felt this. Yet, last night, as we entered this dark moon, the ending of the previous cycle and the initiatory energy of the Astrological New Year, I could also feel this systemic collapse inside me.

Last night, I had this overwhelming urge to fall to the earth, rest my cheek against it, lay my enormous pregnant belly in the grass and dirt, and cry for the last dark moon before motherhood. I feel so much excitement for what’s to come, and there’s this final piece of grief for my low-responsibility, childless life coming out with the end of this lunar cycle. And as much as I have always wanted to be a mother, I believe that permitting myself to feel this grief and emotion will help me stand in my new role with more confidence and fortitude. So I allowed it.

All over social media today, you’ll find New Moon rituals, manifestation routines, and journal prompts for you to do. Instead of doing anything today, I want to encourage you to do nothing – allow yourself to rest if you haven’t done so already. Depending on what’s going on, I always offer myself 1-3 days of total and complete rest over the Dark/New Moon – usually slightly before and during. It’s become an absolute necessity that allows me to let go of the previous cycle before running headlong into the next.

We are allowed to rest.

And your rest is powerful. I’m not just talking about physical rest either; I’m talking about cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual rest.

Unplug.

Clear your calendar as much as possible.

Put your to-do list on pause.

Yes, this lunar cycle is important. It’s the first one of the Astrological New Year; how we take care of ourselves throughout it, honour ourselves and practice presence will set us up for the year to come. There is always a pause between endings and beginnings, death and new life, so give yourself at least a day before setting your new intentions, declaring your manifestations and trying to rev up for fresh beginnings.

For me, this will come easily today. Already my body has had enough – post sickness and bursting from the inside out I’m pretty happy to lay around in bed, putts about in the sunny garden, take a day-time-bath and massage my belly – all while feeling whatever it is I need to feel. But, complete rest has not always been easy. This time I have the excuses that I’ve been sick and am about to pop, so I can rest! Commonly, our brains will tell us that we need an excuse – we don’t. But resting without one can bring a lot up of inner judgement, shame or big emotions within us because it goes against the lessons of our cultural conditioning.

I want to tell you that these lessons are wrong – we were lied to. We do not need to move, seek for more, achieve or perform constantly. And we do not need an excuse to rest.

We are allowed to rest simply because we are human and part of nature.
